Mighty Lion Band Boosters Foundation

Volunteering

The band is one of the few organizations on a high school camps that invites parental involvement, and the MLBBF is charged with recruiting and organizing volunteers. From band camp to football games to marching competitions to feeding the band in concert seasion -- it takes a small army of volunteers to keep the band running smoothly. "Many hands make the workoad light."

Volunteer Roles

Our need for volunteers varies throughout the year. Here are some of the roles we need help with:

Volunteers at work
  • Individual Fundraising: Many opportunities for parents and students to earn money for your student’s band account by working concessions at the Cajundome and Ragin Cajuns’ athletic events.
  • Band Camp/Special Rehearsals: Workers prep and serve fruit/gatorade/water and help with general cleanup and other needs. This is a great way to get a peek into what goes into preparing a marching show.
  • Prop Construction/Repairs: Each year a team of parents is needed to build marching show props. Must be able to do physical labor in the summer heat and tolerate corny “dad jokes.” No other special skills or tools required, but they are helpful.
  • Chaperone: A team of 10-20 chaperones is on hand for all football games and festivals/competition as an adult presence on buses and to help students throughout the event with drinks, escorts to restrooms, moving equipment onto the field, and whatever needs arise. Great way to meet other parents and to get a peek into the marching band performance experience. (Purchase of an official Mighty Lion Band polo from Absolutely Monogramming is required.)
  • Equipment Transportation: Off-site rehearsals, football games and festivals require trucks and trailers along with a team of folks to load, drive, and unload them. We need many helpers willing to load/unload, and a smaller number willing to drive Penskes or tow trailers.
  • Cooking/Serving: MLBBF feeds the Band at some special rehearsals and other events. Sometimes we cook burgers. Sometimes we hand out pizza or eggrolls and fried rice. This is a great way to see the students being themselves in their off time.
  • Color Guard Flags & Costumes Help needed with cutting, ironing, sewing & taping Color Guard flags and sometimes for costume alterations.
  • Medical: Medical professionals (nurses, doctors, EMTs, PTs, OTs, etc.) are on hand throughout band camp and at festivals/competitions to help with student medical needs. Band camp is especially busy as students acclimate to the heat and exertion.
  • Uniforms: Each summer, marching uniforms are fitted by Uniform Crew students. A few volunteers help UC with fitting and ironing. No sewing required.
  • General volunteer: Not sure what you want to help with? Get on our general volunteer list and find out all of the various ways you can pitch in.
  • Special Events
    • Louisiana Concert Band Invitational (LCBI): Concert band festival hosted by MLBBF in March at Angelle Hall, featuring bands from around the state. This event is a fundraiser for the MLBBF budget. Volunteers are needed for reception, concessions, clean up, shirt and ticket sales, etc.
    • Senior Night: Seniors will be honored one evening during marching season. Volunteers will help prepare flowers for parent presentation, set up/take down a reception area, and serve refreshments.
    • Bandboree: Bandboree is an early season marching festival hosted by LHS. It is MLBBF’s biggest fundraiser and requires an army of volunteers for success. Volunteers set up/tear down, cook/sell concessions, monitor parking, hydrate participating bands, serve as band liaisons, and anything else that comes with hosting 2000+ guests and participants.
    • Ye Olde Christmas: Our annual Christmas concert spread over 2 nights. Volunteers serve gumbo, accept tickets and help decorate.
